چکیده

Recent finite-element results by S. Cl. Larsson and A. J. Carlsson suggest a limited range of validity to the ‘small scale yielding approximation’, whereby small crack tip plastic zones are correlated in terms of the elastic stress intensity factor, It is shown with the help of a model for plane strain yielding that their results may be explained by considering the non-singular stress, acting parallel to the crack at its tip, which accompanies the inverse square-root elastic singularity. Further implications of the non-singular stress term for crack tip deformations and fracturing are examined. It is suggested that its effect on crack tip parameters, such as the opening displacement and J-integral, is less pronounced than its effect on the yield zone size.

Rosakis On the Scale of the Nonlinear Effect in a Crack Problem

When crack problems are analyzed on the basis of nonlinear theories, such as finjte elasticity or deformation theory of plasticity, it is inevitable that nonlinear effects will predominate near a crack-tip, even if the loads are small. The most favorable circumstance in this regard occurs when the loads are so small that the zone of significant nonlinearity lies within the region of validity of...

Continuing Crack-tip Deformation and Fracture for Plane-strain Crack Growth in Elastic-plastic Solids

ANALYSIS of the deformation field consistent with a Prandtl stress distribution travelling with an advancing plane-strain crack reveals the functional form of the near tip crack profile in an elastic-plastic solid. The crack opening 6 is shown to have the form 6 N r In (const./r) at a distance r from the tip. This observation coupled with data generated from finite element investigations of gro...

Steady-state Crack Growth and Work of Fracture for Solids Characterized by Strain Gradient Plasticity

Mode I steady-state crack growth is analysed under plane strain conditions in small scale yielding. The elastic-plastic solid is characterized by a generalization of JZ flow theory which accounts for the influence of the gradients of plastic strains on hardening. The constitutive model involves one new parameter, a material length 1, specifying the scale of nonuniform deformation at which harde...

Elastic-plastic Analysis of Combined Mode I and Iii Crack-tip Fields under Small-scale Yielding Conditions

WITHIN THE context of the small-strain approach, combined mode I and III near-tip fields of a stationary crack in an elastic-plastic solid are obtained by finite element analysis under small-scale yielding conditions. To investigate the behavior of the near-tip fields, the normalized stresses ahead of the crack tip are plotted as functions of the normalized radial distance to the tip for severa...
